Viral Marketing: Frenzied Waters
Every once in while you run into something and want to share it with everyone you know. This happened to me this weekend. On Sunday, I browsed through my Google Reader and saw an interesting blog title on Chris Brogan’s blog called “My Death Notice from Frenzied Waters”. Apparently, the team that created “Frenzied Waters” sent Chris a jar containing lots of shark-related items as well as a death notice inside of an old jar.
Upon watching Chris’ video, I checked out the Frenzied Waters website. On Sunday, it contained 4 jars floating. 2 that linked to videos of shark attacks, one that had Monday’s date 7/20/09 listed above it (it didn’t link anywhere), and one jar that stated “My Story”.
After selecting “My Story”, I was allowed to plug into my Facebook profile and the site generated a video about me being killed by a shark complete with an obituary and lots of information in a “news-like” using the content from my Facebook page. It was quite clever and it REALLY made me want to go back on 7/20/09 to find out more.
On Monday, I found myself checking out the site several times during the day. It appears to have been updated later in the afternoon. It is then that I found that Discovery Channel was behind this entire website promoting the famous “Shark Week” on the Discovery Channel. Now there is another video that is displayed in the jar that is set in Florida.
It’s when I see great viral marketing like this, that I am reminded of how impactful it can be . If their is an interesting story/great content, people will spread the message!

how can I get one of these jars?
Kathy – My thoughts exactly. It looks like this came from Discovery Channel’s PR team (I’m not sure if they use an agency or if it’s an internal function there).
