5 Ways Marketing Climbers Approach Networking
Yesterday I attended our Charlotte Area’s Texas A&M Muster. Aggie Muster is a tradition that occurs each year on April 21st and is a day of remembrance for fallen Aggies. Typically over 300 Musters occur around the world as Aggies live by the words:
“If there is an A&M man in one-hundred miles of you, you are expected to get together, eat a little, and live over the days you spent at the A&M College of Texas.”
As I enjoyed the evening with fellow Aggies in the Charlotte area, I couldn’t help but realize the power of the Aggie Network. It also made me think about networking in general and led me to write about these 5 ways that I feel Marketing Climbers approach networking. Enjoy.
1. Networking must mean Give First, Take Later.
This is a pretty straight forward concept but often abandoned. Networking is about helping others and you must participate in helping others first and foremost. Don’t fall into the trap of connecting with others only when you need something from them.
2. Don’t forget those you already know.
Spend time with groups you are already associated with whether it is your old college or graduate school friends, previous co-workers, alumni groups and even groups you are associate with through various social networking sites such as Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.

3. Make time for those you work with.
My vice-president at Lowe’s once told us to spend about 20% of our days helping other people to achieve their agenda or goals. I thought it was great advice. Dedicate time everyday to help others you work with.
4. Get outside and connect with others.
Share and exchange perspectives with other business people. A few ideas include: join a young Professionals Group, attend networking events while traveling on business, participate in groups on LinkedIn and other social networking sites.
5. Get a mentor.
Having a mentor is a great way to get advice from a seasoned business professional aside from the input you receive from your supervisor. Mentors can help you see things from a different perspective and can become active in helping you identify and achieve your goals.
